Agnostic thinker

I’m afraid I cannot claim to be any great scholar or writer although I was told by my grandfather at a very young age that I was cursed with common sense.I always struggled with the concept of God was he real or not? And I finally came to the conclusion the God is essence of good I could never know what god is so I decided to try and look at what he is not.

I failed to see any sense in condemning or belittling anyone because they chose to believe in God. Someone asking you to prove you chose believe in God. Is like me trying to prove to someone red was my favorite colour or that like a song. How does one prove a belief? If I can’t prove I love a painting or a sunset does it mean its not true? If I say I believe in aliens but cannot prove they exist does that mean they cannot exist? Do you even need proof of a Philosophy or Literature or The Arts or can I just give a reason why I like it.

I believe in Consciousness can I prove that? If God is love? So I just came to the conclusion that I don’t think I know. I thought if someone believes and someone lacks a belief and someone admits they do not know which one of the three is closest to the truth?

Then I encountered the atheists and listened as learned men rambled on and on as if they knew there was no God and when I looked at what they said all I could find was logical fallacies, circular paralogic and rhetoric. All they did was deny God because they lacked a belief in what the Christians chose to believe. And they hold up Creation VS. Evolution as if Religion was somehow related to Science. I wonder do the realize that evolution is just a theory and not a law? Do they not know the Theory of Evolution has not been proven? Because an atheist cannot prove evolution does that mean it is not real? I am agnostic on that as well.

  1. Hello… I hope you don’t mind me writing this… this isn’t spam, I promise!

My name is Richard J. Bartlett and I have my own blog on WordPress, The Last Song I Heard – http://thelastsongiheard.wordpress.com – which I predominantly write for my son.

I’m in the process of writing a book about personal beliefs (or lack, thereof) and was wondering if you’d be interested in contributing.

I’m trying to get viewpoints from a broad range of people, representing a broad range of beliefs, including agnostics and atheists. My goal is for the reader to be presented with new and thought-provoking ideas about our place in the universe and, hopefully, to find some common ground that between the different beliefs.

If you’re interested, you can read more about it here – http://thelastsongiheard.wordpress.com/2013/01/04/the-rivers-of-belief-enigma/

I hope you can contribute – I’d love to read your responses!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at thelastsongiheard “at” gmail.com

    Sincerely,

    Richard J. Bartlett

    • Thanks so much for your responses! I really appreciate it! I found your answers very interesting – not to mention fair, balanced and unassuming πŸ™‚ I’m hoping to publish in the next few months so I’ll let you know closer to the time πŸ™‚

  2. Hello,

I’ve prepped your responses, ready to be included in the book, but I’m missing answers to the following two questions –

Tell me about a time when someone has helped you, without first being asked?

Tell me about a time when you made a sacrifice to help someone else.

I can’t publish without those two answers because I’d like for readers to see how people of differing beliefs have some common ground and experiences and it makes it difficult with information missing.

If you’re able to email me your answers at thelastsongiheard “at” gmail.com, I’d be very grateful πŸ™‚

Thanks again for everything you’ve done so far!

    Clear skies,

    Richard

  3. Your site is interesting but you have a tendency to confuse concepts:

All they [atheists] did was deny God because they lacked a belief in what the Christians chose to believe.

Actually atheists state that there is no proof that a God or gods exist. They should not and don’t assert “I know there is no God!” I deny God!” That is not an accurate representation.

evolution is just a theory and not a law?
Nobody and I mean NOBODY states that evolution is a law. Laws are created by men. I think you meant to say, “evolution is a theory and not a fact.”

However, still you confuse the concepts of a theory in science with facts.

Only math has facts. Physics is close but still not the same as pure mathematics.

The preponderance of evidence from every discipline from every corner of the globe from every culture and every religion for the past 150 years supports evolution. So I kinda sorta think there may be something to it.

Most scientists will state that evolution is true or a fact just as the “theory” of gravity is true and a fact. Same concept. Just that evolution is more difficult to comprehend and certainly assimilate with centuries-old religious beliefs. Like the sun revolves around the earth.

You should read my book “How to speak fluent atheist” so you won’t confuse concepts so often.

    With great love and respect

  4. I am confused… well thanks for pointing that out πŸ™‚ Confused about admitting I know nothing or another state of confusion?

Atheist Lackey O’ Belief now there is a position that means nothing talk about a POV with no balls… That’s just a way to avoid proving your position or making a claim, which of course cannot be proven.

They should not and don’t assert β€œI know there is no God!” I deny God!”
Hmmm sounds Agnostic like admitting you know nothing…

“Nobody and I mean NOBODY states that evolution is a law.”
You underestimate the stupidity of the vast majority of atheists I’m afraid.

“Only math has facts. Physics is close but still not the same as pure mathematics.”

Math provides proof not facts…and anyone who mixes physics with religion does not understand physics…

“The preponderance of evidence from every discipline from every corner of the globe from every culture and every religion for the past 150 years supports evolution. So I kinda sorta think there may be something to it.”

Yes but not one shread of proof… or maybe you have some you are not sharing?

“Most scientists will state that evolution is true or a fact just as the β€œtheory” of gravity is true and a fact. Same concept. Just that evolution is more difficult to comprehend and certainly assimilate with centuries-old religious beliefs. Like the sun revolves around the earth.”

Yes indeed like when science thought the world was flat. And the big bang theory was all the rage. They were all thought to be true.

Read your book? reading your post was enough πŸ™‚

  5. This whole site makes a straw man of atheism.

Atheism is disbelief or lack of belief in God or Gods. Check out the Oxford Dictionary.

This is to be distinguished from the Hosts view that Atheists are absolutely, 100% scientifically certain there is no God, and that they think they can prove it. Hogwash.

We may choose to be atheist if:

    1. Due to no evidence of a suggested phenomenon
    2. I choose not to believe it

Its a belief, not a certainty.

Equally, the host conveys a certainty that the agnostic position is self evident.

Agnostic – a person who believes that we cannot know whether God(s) exist.

This is a belief which cannot be proven. Same as theist or atheism.

So I can lay claim to being agnostic about agnosticism.

And what it is the point in making such a minor distinction between lack of belief in God, and not being able to disprove God. We dont do this about anything else. Are you intellectually offended by the arrogant skeptics who dont believe in alien abductions? These people who are so certain that aliens have never abducted or impregnated even one person. How could they know this, but if you listen to them you would think that someone has to be an idiot to believe it.

The default position is to lack belief in something unless presented by evidence.

This site strikes me as Christian apology masquerading as agnosticism.

As per previous evolution is true.

    • Hi Hugh I will attempt to address each of your assertions and assumptions each in turn.

“This whole site makes a straw man of atheism.” I’ll address your assertion with a claim of hasty generalization.

“Atheism is disbelief or lack of belief in God or Gods. Check out the Oxford Dictionary. This is to be distinguished from the Hosts view that Atheists are absolutely, 100% scientifically certain there is no God, and that they think they can prove it. Hogwash.”

I’m not sure why you would presume to think you know what I think… but at any rate, I fail to see what Science has to do with religion or God, perhaps you can enlighten me. And I know you CAN’T prove your point.

“We may choose to be atheist if:

      1. Due to no evidence of a suggested phenomenon
      2. I choose not to believe it

Its a belief, not a certainty.”

Now Let me quote you”and that they think they can prove it. Hogwash. ” And in the next sentence you claim the basis of your non belief is due to a Theists inability to prove their position of belief…. WTF? you can’t have it both ways… You choose not to believe they choose to believe… whats your point? you are the opposite sides of the same coin. Belief is not a certainty… quite right and neither is a lack of belief…

“Equally, the host conveys a certainty that the agnostic position is self evident. Agnostic – a person who believes that we cannot know whether God(s) exist. This is a belief which cannot be proven. Same as theist or atheism.
So I can lay claim to being agnostic about agnosticism.”

Yes I can agree with you on this point the agnostic position is self evident.. I like to call it the truth… I don’t know if there is a God or not. Your atheist definition of and agnostic is dead wrong… PERIOD… Agnostic – I don’t know if there is a god… but if an atheist has evidence to the contrary I would be happy to hear it… Seriously… But of course you don’t. Atheism is just an opinion. Agnosticism is not a belief, its just a fact I don’t know.

“So I can lay claim to being agnostic about agnosticism.” I couldn’t agree more with you … you know nothing about Agnosticism…

“And what it is the point in making such a minor distinction between lack of belief in God, and not being able to disprove God. We dont do this about anything else. Are you intellectually offended by the arrogant skeptics who dont believe in alien abductions? These people who are so certain that aliens have never abducted or impregnated even one person. How could they know this, but if you listen to them you would think that someone has to be an idiot to believe it. ”

A Minor distinction πŸ™‚ LOL RU Serious.. Atheists routinely ask Theists to prove God exists when they are just have a belief. How is that different than a lack of belief in the real world…? And aliens.. you believe in aliens?? Sorry I’m agnostic on those as well… You have any proof of aliens, ghosts or reincarnated Elvis’s please PLEASE pass them on to me πŸ™‚

“The default position is to lack belief in something unless presented by evidence.” No my friend you have no idea what you are talking about. Do you really think any theory is disbelieved just because some moron does not agree with it or lacks a belief in it? NO! Any theory stands as fact until disproved … Like the theory of evolution… Can you prove the theory is correct? No, the same can be said of any theory.

Its much the same as the flat earth people back in the day. They didn’t just wake up and say hey ok its now round earth days… Somebody proved it to be false and everybody moved on…. A small group never got together and pissed and moaned crying for proof the world was flat did they? NO somebody falsified the flat earth claim, that’s how its done. Due diligence. The world owed no burden of proof to the anyone. Same thing still holds true today. And that’s what you need to do with god … disprove it.. and you will change the world…

“This site strikes me as Christian apology masquerading as agnosticism. As per previous evolution is true.” That again is just your opinion… and an opinion without knowledge is just ignorance. And evolution is just a theory… not a law.
